Starting therapy can be difficult.

I want to make that process a little easier

How do we get started?

The first step is making sure we're the right fit. This starts with a 15-minute phone consultation where you tell me a bit about what's been going on and we come up with a plan. From here, we either book our first session or I refer you to one of my excellent colleagues.

What's the first session like?

We'll spend most of our time in the first session talking about what's on your mind, including parts of your past. We'll use this information to build a shared understanding of your concerns and develop goals for therapy. Then, we'll develop a unique treatment plan that fits your needs.

Does therapy help?

Yes! For about 80% of people, psychotherapy helps.

  • You’re likely to better understand yourself, learn new skills, and meet your goals. Bad memories may also feel less sharp and painful.

  • Psychotherapy works best if you fit with your psychologist, that is, you feel understood and have a good connection with them.

Does therapy hurt?

It can. But it is unlikely.

  • Most hurt comes from not getting what you expected, or because psychotherapy just didn’t work.

  • Sometimes it hurts because that’s part of the process of getting better. Kind of like disinfecting a wound before putting on a band-aid.

  • Other times, it hurts because you changed, and others around you have not.

If therapy is hurting more than it’s helping, we can absolutely change things! I’m here to minimize the pain and maximize the help.

What alternatives do I have?

There are many ways to reach your goals! Therapy is just one of them.

  • Other methods might include group therapy, exercise, spiritual or religious resources, or other health resources (e.g., meeting with a physician, occupational therapist, dietician).

And sometimes, we’re not the right fit! Know that I don’t take this personally.

I’m here to help you, and sometimes that means getting someone else to do the helping. I can help you connect with my colleagues or other mental health services.

  • There are also many other free and low-cost mental health services in the city. You can learn about them by calling 211 or visiting ab.211.ca.

How long are sessions?

Sessions are typically 50 minutes. This is a standard therapeutic hour.

If you want longer sessions (1.5 hours), please let me know in advance.

We can determine the frequency of our meetings (e.g., every week, 2 weeks) together.

How much does it cost?

I follow the fee schedule recommended by the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta.

  • 50-minute session | $235

  • 80-minute session | $350

How do I pay/do you take insurance?

The easiest way to pay is

I am registered with SunLife, BlueCross and NIHB.

I do not typically direct bill, but am more than pleased to discuss your insurance and financial situation!
